Marsden, 5 miles away, is the place to go for a quieter village, but is just as individual as Holmfirth. Marsden is the home to one end of the remarkable Standedge Tunnel, www.standedge.co.uk being the longest, highest and deepest canal navigation tunnel in England. There is a visitor centre and boat trips through this marvel of Victorian engineering. Marsden itself is a buoyant village, with live music and a variety of shops and pubs.

Slaithwaite, 3 miles away, is the home of the nearest leisure centre and swimming pool. The canal from Marsden travels through Slaithwaite on its way to Huddersfield. This provides good level walking and is home to the famous Moon Raking festival. Old mills have been transformed into modern living complexes along the canal. A true mixture of old meets new. An example of this is Titanic mills, housing the UKs first Eco health spar, http://www.titanicspa.com/Templates/Pages/Home.aspx boasting salt water swimming pool, gymnasium, a heat experience complex (including an ice room) along with the traditional relaxation therapies and treatment rooms you would expect from such a prestigious facility.

Meltham ChurchMeltham centre is half a mile from the cottage. There are a mixture of village shops and a supermarket in the village centre. There are a number of Golf courses nearby, the closest being Meltham Golf club. Other attractions include local walks such as the newly constructed Green Way, built on the site of the railway track, used to ferry David Brown Tractors, built at the local Meltham Mills, to their destinations all over the country. There is a tractor museum within the village, celebrating the hive of industry that once grew and thrived here.

Parks, a library, local horse riding and a community fire station all add up to make Meltham an individual village of quiet appeal, ideally situated to explore the surrounding areas. It is, in our opinion, little wonder Meltham is fast becoming a sort after residential area.
